When I began my Healthy Mummy business in 2010, I never imagined that it would be at a $22m turnover, that I would have helped mums lose over 3 million kilos and that 8 years later I would have have my own book that after 2 weeks on the book shelves would be the number 1 best selling lifestyle book in Australia!
When I started my business in 2010, it was always about doing something worthwhile.
It was about doing something good. Not making money
I had come from a corporate background where I didn’t feel I was doing anything worthwhile or good so as well as crafting a business where I could be around for bringing up my children and could work from home – my main driver was that I would do something good and I wanted to help other mums.
I didn’t sit down and have a business plan or mastermind plan of that in 8 years I would be at the stage I am now at.
I didn’t have a plan of how I would grow each year.
I didn’t have a mentor.
I didn’t get a loan or go into debt.
I didn’t have a goal of reaching a certain number of sales or $ by a certain time
Instead I focused every day on creating something good and helping other mums
I made a business plan around the customer – which was the customer is ALWAYS number 1, is AWLAYS my number 1 concern and my job was to help mums.
I made a plan around what the customer needed and where I felt I could create a unique service, support and product offering – which was helping mums achieve health and weight loss after having children.
Once I had it really clear in my head about what I need to deliver to the customer and how I could help mums and what I needed to start building, I quit my job and sold my house and I started building my business and the now very famous support community with over 190,000 mums in
And from that day, I have never stopped building and have never stopped placing the customer as number 1 and even though the turnover is HUGE – I invest all of it back into the business and every single year as opposed to taking money out. And I work my butt off every single day and I never ever stop working. I work so hard and I work hard for the customer and I always have the customer in my mind with every thing I do.
My dedication and hard work is without doubt uncommon but I am so passionate about what I do that it is just a way of life and it is who I am.
I am so driven to do a good job for the customer and to create an amazing experience, support network and service that I never ever stop working hard to achieve it as it is my goal to always do better and deliver more.
The business evolves constantly based on the wants and needs of the customer and I pride myself in always listening to their needs and actioning where I can.
I am also a huge believer in investing in your business. I invest so much money back into the business all the time. We develop an enormous amount of new products – both digital products (apps, websites) and physical products and the cost to do it well is high.
For me, it is imperative to always do everything with the highest standards so our investment in this area is high but I am driven to deliver amazing new technology and products to the customers asking for it so I always reinvest back.
My number 1 tip for success?
Place the customer as number 1
I LOVE and adore my customers. I think about them every day. I think every day how I can do better. How I can improve what I do. How I can listen and what I can do to make things easier for them
I let the customer DRIVE every decision we make. Every product we create. Every idea we have comes from my customers who I owe everything to.
For example, my very first store wide book, “The Busy Mums Guide To Weight Loss” is now out in all stores but the book’s direction all came from the customer.
I asked them for their FAVOURITE recipes from The Healthy Mummy (which was a tough call as we have over 4,000) and customers voted for their top 100. It is these 100 recipes that are in the book!
And this book is now in ALL stores and book stores and is now the number 1 selling lifestyle book in Australia!
Having this approach enabled me to work from home for 4 years of the business’ life and I feel so lucky to have been able to do that and to work from home with my two little boys.
After that I invested in an office as the growth of the business needed a whole fleet of awesome staff and we needed a base!
My 5 top tips for working from home
- Have a designated work space so you have a place to sit and work
- Have times you work – rather than working all the time
- Make it work for you. For me it was about my work in whilst my kids slept and juggling my work day around my kids. This meant I would be always up late working, but it meant I never missed out on time with my kids
- Make sure you get out of the house so work doesn’t become all consuming – even if just for a coffee of a walk
- Make sure you claim your ‘office space’ as a tax deduction at the end of the year as if you are using 30% of your house for work then 30% of your rent/mortgage can go against your business – same with bills for electricity and internet etc
- Make sure you always have time for your family as this is crucial. My family are the loves of my life and I work crazy hours but I always make sure I am there for them and would rather stay up till midnight and be up and 5.00am so I am there for them after school. My business is so busy and the work is never done but my kids will never be young again so I always ensure I am there and I don’t miss a thing.
“The Busy Mums Guide To Weight Loss” is now out in all book stores including K-mart, Big W and Target
